In a stunning display of advanced yacht roll control and stabilization technology, Quantum Marine Engineering is pleased to announce that the first ZeroSpeed™ MagLift™ rotary stabilizer system delivered by Quantum successfully completed sea trials in Brazil on June 16, 2005.

The yacht, a 95' Explorer built by INACE, launched recently at the INACE Shipyard in Brazil. Mike Perkins, Vice President of Quantum, was phoned by the yacht's owner and John DeCaro, an Explorer Yachts broker, after the first full day of sea trials. Both the owner and broker were ecstatic about the performance of this innovative stabilizer system. Mike said that “I cannot remember all of the superlative adjectives they used reporting the results! They had good, challenging conditions during these first trials, where they ran from 3-11 knots in 5 to 6 foot seas, and they told me the vessel was 'like a rock.'”

Mike continued: “The owner stated that he had never anticipated that the performance would be anywhere near what was seen on this first sea trial. The ship was steady throughout its speed range and showed 'remarkable' stability at very slow speeds. Then, John DeCaro got on the line to tell me that Zero Speed™ mode was extensively tested with outstanding results.”

The Quantum “brains trust” was present to conduct these trials, evidence of the magnitude of this latest stabilizer development. The team from Quantum included John Allen, President of QME, who was accompanied by Dave Reeve, QME's Production Manager and John Barth, Manager of Electrical Engineering. Hans Ooms, Quantum's Controls and Hydrodynamics expert, joined them from Holland to conduct sophisticated control tuning and software configuration.

Rotary stabilization represents a major breakthrough for the Quantum team, and this application will become the platform for further development of Quantum's extremely versatile technology. Rotors, which use the Magnus effect and generate lift the same way a golf ball or baseball curve in flight, are extremely efficient at lower speeds and at anchor. And, they can be retracted for minimum drag at higher speeds- one ideal application is sportfishing vessels that require high speeds to traverse to the fishing grounds, and maximum stability at trolling speeds.

Quantum would also like to take this opportunity to say a huge “thank you” to the owner of this exceptional yacht, who offered his new build as the test bed for this technology. Mike Perkins stated: “Without the owner and his faith in our technology and commitment to success, this whole application could not have been possible. And, we also wish to recognize and thank John DeCaro, whose help and support was instrumental in making this project possible.”
