Quantums' innovative ARCHER™ (Advanced Ride Control Highspeed Extendable Retractable) brings ride control to higher speed yachts. Today, advances in propulsion equipment, manufacturing methods, design and engineering, and lightweight materials mean that more and larger yachts are capable of speeds in excess of twenty-four knots, the traditional limit of effectiveness of fin stabilizers.

Application

Quantum's Advanced Ride Control Highspeed Extendable Retractable (ARCHER™) is a sophisticated and intelligent motion comfort control system for high speed yachts that simultaneously provides pitch, roll and trim control by means of retractable winglets built into active trim tabs. The design incorporates a hollow section trim tab with a unique, extendable winglet (NACA 0012). The winglet, electronically controlled and hydraulically actuated, extends from inside the trim tab, and retracts inside the tab when not in use. Conceived by Quantum in collaboration with Island Group, the system is intended for vessels in the 80 – 130 foot range with speeds of 20 – 40 knots. A larger ARCHER™ is in development for larger yachts and commercial vessels up to 250 feet in length.

The ARC 3010 is the advanced electronic control that makes this sophisticated ride control possible. When sea conditions dictate the need for enhanced roll and pitch control, the operator merely selects the "full deployment mode" which extends the foil section winglets to increase the control forces and lengthen the roll control moment arm. Full deployment mode activates the acceleration sensor and control for pitch, the angle and velocity sensor and control for roll and the trim tab attitude control for trim.
The trim tab pictured above is the tab and winglet system that revolutionizes motion control in higher speed yachts. With the winglet retracted, drag is minimized. When needed, the winglet extends for maximum comfort control.
