Sea Fighter, formerly known as the “X-Craft”, joined the ranks of commissioned naval vessels in a ceremony at Nichols Brothers Boatyard. Mike Perkins, Quantum's Vice-President for Business Development, attended; and displayed Quantum's advanced capabilities in the presentation area in the mission bay.

Click for Larger     Currently installed and operational Quantum hydraulics and electronics work with Island Engineering's titanium T-foils and custom rotary interceptors to provide mission-critical stability for flight and small-vessel operations for Sea Fighter, a dramatic test vessel for new missions and capabilities. Littoral combat requires speed, stability, and technology- and Quantum is there.

Mike Perkins' announcement to the Quantum team states it best:

I just wanted to take a moment to tell everyone how well our display and reception went at Nichols Brothers Shipyard for the official X-CRAFT launching and dedication this past week.

For those of you who don't know the details of the project I will give a brief summary:

Click for Larger As Quantum learned the details of the project, and with the welcome opportunity to partner with Island Engineering, we were able to bring our ideas and technology into reality, with the Quantum/Island team winning the contract to supply the technologies and systems for the ride control. The delivered equipment consists of:

T-Foils (titanium) - By Island Engineering
Interceptors (custom rotary design by Island Engineering)
Active skeg (steering and yaw control) - QCBV and Island
Hydraulics for all of the above - QME
Our first order of business must be congratulations to Bill McFann, Rick Loheed and the entire Island Engineering team. Our partners at Island who took the lead in this contract are absolutely revered by the entire X-CRAFT project team, including the ONR (Office of Naval Research), TITAN (the prime contractor) and Nichols Bros. (the builder). It was obvious from the minute we walked into the shipyard that Bill and his gang are considered as a crucial resource for this project. It was gratifying and reassuring to see that Island treats their customers in the same professional and responsive manner that we strive to do with our megayacht clients.

Click for Larger The "technical demonstration" we participated in was held in the ship's mission bay. It was an exclusive affair with only limited invitations, which Bill and his team accessed due to the high regard and respect he has earned from the players in this project. It was truly a new and unique experience for me to be surrounded by the top decision makers for the USN's ONR group, as well as Department of Navy and US Coast Guard senior officers.

Click for Larger Our presentation was enhanced by an animation produced by John Koop at VirtueGraphics (who again outperformed our expectations with a real "knock 'em dead" DVD) where he depicted the X-Craft in a mission environment with a focus on the motion control systems. The animation demonstrated the Island/Quantum team's ability to deliver advanced motion control technology, technology which will be very important to the US navy's future ship platforms. For a variety of reasons and, based on the reception we received at the X-Craft I am sure that more exciting developments are just on the horizon!
